Nursery

/ˈnɜːrsəri/ noun

Definition

A room in a house for young children, or a place where plants or young animals are cared for and raised.

Etymology

From Old French 'norrice' meaning 'nurse', from Latin 'nutrix' meaning 'wet nurse'. The plant-growing sense developed by analogy in the 17th century, as both involve nurturing young, developing life.

Kelly Says

Nursery rhymes were originally not meant for children at all - many were political satires or adult folk songs that later became associated with childhood. The first commercial plant nurseries appeared in 16th century Europe as exploration brought new species from around the world.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Nurseries became feminized spaces in 19th-century ideology, coded as women's 'natural' domain and used to justify exclusion from other professions and public roles.

Inclusive Usage

Use descriptively without reinforcing gender assumptions about who should work with children or manage early education.

Inclusive Alternatives

["early learning center","childcare facility"]

Empowerment Note

Women educators and childcare pioneers like Maria Montessori and Froebel's collaborators developed rigorous pedagogical methods often credited to male theorists.
