Definition
Toward or in the direction of the ground; downward.
Etymology
From ground + -ward (Old English '-weard,' meaning toward a direction). Archaic or poetic directional adverb following the pattern of upward, downward, etc.
Kelly Says
English has dozens of '-ward' words (backward, forward, heavenward) that all work the same way, but groundward barely survived in modern English—it lost out to the simpler 'downward' in the great word competition.
