Growlery

/ˈɡraʊleri/ noun

Definition

A room or retreat where someone can go to be alone and grumpy without bothering others.

Etymology

From 'growl' (to make a deep sound) plus '-ery' (a place for doing something). The suffix '-ery' comes from Old French and means a workplace or location associated with an activity. This word was popularized by Charles Dickens in the 19th century.

Kelly Says

Dickens actually used this word to describe a private grumpy room in 'Bleak House,' and it's basically the Victorian version of what we'd now call a 'man cave' or mental health space—a perfectly reasonable place to go when you need to be moody alone.
