Definition
The science and practice of designing, making, and firing guns and cannons, especially in military contexts.
Etymology
From 'gun' (possibly from Old Norse 'gunnr' meaning 'war') plus the suffix '-ery' (a place or practice). The term became prominent in the 16th century when artillery became crucial to warfare and gunnery schools were established.
Kelly Says
Naval gunnery evolved into one of the most complex sciences—sailors had to calculate wind, wave height, ship movement, and gravity while aiming, which is why HMS Dreadnought's accurate gunnery made it the most feared warship in 1906 and started an arms race.
