Definition
A triangular or diamond-shaped piece of fabric inserted into a seam to provide extra room for movement or to reinforce areas of stress. Gussets are commonly found in underarms, crotch areas, and sleeve attachments.
Etymology
From Old French 'gousset' meaning a small pouch or piece of mail armor. The term transferred to clothing construction because gussets served a similar function of providing flexibility and protection in areas of movement.
Kelly Says
Medieval chain mail used gussets to allow knights to move their arms freely - the same principle applies to modern athletic wear! High-end activewear brands strategically place gussets to prevent tearing and improve range of motion, making this ancient technique essential for contemporary performance clothing.
