Definition
Plural of gyroscope; spinning devices that maintain their orientation in space and resist changes to their axis of rotation, used in navigation and stabilization.
Etymology
From Greek 'gyros' (rotation) + 'skopein' (to observe, look at). Literally means 'rotation observer,' named for how it demonstrates rotational principles.

Gyroscopes seem to defy gravity by staying tilted—they don't actually defy anything, but Newton's laws of angular momentum make them so resistant to tipping that they look almost magical.
