Definition
Plural of hairlock; multiple locks, curls, or sections of hair.
Etymology
From Old English 'hær' (hair) + 'loc' (lock) + '-s' (plural marker from Old English).
Kelly Says
The word 'locks' for hair is poetic and archaic now—you'll see it in older literature and poetry ('golden locks,' 'raven locks') where it created a more romantic tone than simply saying 'hair.'
