Haiti

/ˈheɪti/ proper noun

Definition

A Caribbean nation occupying the western portion of the island of Hispaniola, known for being the first independent Black republic.

Etymology

From Taíno hayti meaning 'mountainous land' or 'land of high mountains.' The indigenous name was restored when the country gained independence in 1804, replacing the colonial name Saint-Domingue used by the French.

Kelly Says

Haiti's name restoration was a revolutionary act - by choosing the original Taíno name over the colonial 'Saint-Domingue,' the newly freed slaves honored the island's first inhabitants while rejecting their enslavers' language, making the country's very name a declaration of indigenous solidarity and anti-colonial identity.
