Definition
A person who commits heists; a robber, thief, or member of a theft crew.
Etymology
From 'heist' plus *-er* (one who does). The agent noun emerged from American slang alongside the heist vocabulary in the early-to-mid 20th century.
Kelly Says
'Heister' is solidly slang, while 'heist' has become almost mainstream enough for news articles—showing how the most colorful words from underworld vocabulary sometimes graduate into general use when they're fun enough.
