Definition
To make something Greek in character, or to cause people or places to adopt Greek language, culture, and customs.
Etymology
From Hellene (Greek) plus -ize (to make or cause to be). The verb form allows for active descriptions of cultural change processes.
Kelly Says
When Alexander the Great wanted to hellenize Egypt, he didn't force Greeks on people—he did something cleverer. He became pharaoh, adopted Egyptian customs, and created an atmosphere where being Greek AND Egyptian was not just possible but prestigious.
