Definition
In music, an interval that is half a perfect fifth, equivalent to a tritone or augmented fourth.
Etymology
From Greek 'hemi-' (half) + 'dia' (through) + 'pente' (five). The perfect fifth spans five scale degrees, so hemidiapente is exactly halfway between the root and a perfect fifth.

The hemidiapente was called 'diabolus in musica' (the devil in music) by medieval composers because its unsettling, dissonant sound was thought to be demonic—now we love it in rock and metal!
