Hepatatrophy

/ˌhɛpətəˈtroʊfi/ noun

Definition

Shrinkage or degeneration of liver tissue; the same condition as hepatatrophia.

Etymology

From Greek 'hepar' (liver) combined with 'atrophy' (wasting away). This is the more common modern spelling of the same condition previously called hepatatrophia.

Kelly Says

When alcoholic cirrhosis advances, hepatatrophy occurs as healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue—the organ literally shrinks as it loses function, which is why liver transplants become necessary!
