Highbrow

/ˈhaɪbraʊ/ adjective

Definition

Relating to or characterized by intellectual or cultural sophistication; appealing to educated or refined tastes.

Etymology

First used in the 1880s, this term comes from the belief that people with high foreheads (high brows) were more intelligent. The word evolved from phrenology, the pseudoscience that claimed skull shape determined personality traits.

Kelly Says

Think of someone literally raising their eyebrows in a snooty way when encountering 'lowbrow' entertainment. The higher the brow, the more sophisticated the taste!
