Ihr

/iːr/ pronoun

Definition

German second-person plural pronoun meaning 'you' (addressing multiple people informally).

Etymology

From Old High German ir, related to Gothic jus, all from Proto-Germanic *jūz. This pronoun has remained relatively stable in German for over a millennium, distinguishing between formal and informal address of groups.

Kelly Says

German's 'ihr' represents a fascinating aspect of language that English lost - the ability to distinguish between addressing one person versus many people informally. While English collapsed 'thou/you' into just 'you,' German maintains this precision, making social relationships more explicit in every conversation.
