Innsbruck

/ˈɪnzbrʊk/ noun

Definition

A city in western Austria, capital of the state of Tyrol, located in the Alps. Famous for winter sports and twice hosted the Winter Olympics.

Etymology

From German, literally meaning 'bridge over the Inn,' where Inn is the river that flows through the city and 'bruck' is an old form of 'Brücke' meaning bridge. The settlement grew around a strategic river crossing point.

Kelly Says

Innsbruck is one of only three cities to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice (1964 and 1976), and its name literally describes its most important historical feature - the bridge that made trade and travel possible across the Inn River through the Alpine passes.
