Interfaces

/ˈɪntərˌfeɪsɪz/ noun

Definition

Points where two systems, subjects, or organizations meet and interact. In computing, the means by which users interact with computer programs or hardware.

Etymology

From 'inter-' (between) + 'face,' literally meaning 'between faces.' Coined in the 1880s for physical boundaries, it gained prominence in computing in the 1960s as human-computer interaction became crucial.

Kelly Says

The word 'interface' captures something profound about modern life - we spend most of our time not within systems but at their boundaries, translating between different worlds. Every smartphone screen is an interface between human intuition and digital logic, making the complex simple through design.
