Inveigle

/ɪnˈveɪɡəl/ verb

Definition

To persuade someone through deception or flattery to do something they wouldn't normally do; to charm someone into something.

Etymology

From Anglo-French 'enveogler' (to blind/delude), from Old French 'aveugle' (blind). To inveigle someone is to BLIND them with charm — they can't see they're being tricked because the trickster is too dazzling.

Kelly Says

To charm someone so thoroughly they don't realize they've been TRICKED! The word literally comes from 'to blind' — because great persuaders dazzle you until you can't see straight! Con artists inveigle. So do the best salespeople! 😵‍💫✨
