Jinn

/dʒɪn/ noun

Definition

Supernatural beings in Islamic and Arabian mythology, made of smokeless fire, capable of shapeshifting and possessing free will. The plural form of jinni.

Etymology

From Arabic 'jinn', meaning 'to hide' or 'to conceal', related to their invisible nature. The word entered English through French 'génie', which gave us 'genie', though jinn is the more accurate transliteration.

Kelly Says

While Western culture knows them as genies in bottles granting three wishes, authentic jinn in Middle Eastern folklore are complex beings with their own societies, religions, and moral choices - essentially a parallel creation to humans. They're not bound to serve humans and can be good, evil, or morally neutral!
