Definition
Hit something with a sharp blow, usually on a door or surface, or struck someone forcefully.
Etymology
From Old English 'cnucian,' possibly related to similar Germanic words describing hitting or striking; the spelling changed when 'kn' became silent.
Kelly Says
The phrase 'knock on wood' has ancient roots in pagan beliefs that wood spirits would protect you, and it's so ingrained in our culture that people still instinctively do it without knowing the original reason.
