Definition
A landmark is a noticeable object or building that helps people recognize a place, or an event or achievement that marks an important stage in history or development.
Etymology
From *land* plus *mark*, originally meaning a physical marker on the land, such as a boundary stone. Over time, it came to describe any prominent feature or turning point.
Kelly Says
The jump from a literal *mark on the land* to a “landmark decision” shows how easily physical space turns into mental metaphor. We talk about history and ideas as if we’re walking through a landscape full of signposts.
