Limousines

/ˈlɪməˌzinz/ noun

Definition

Luxury vehicles with extended wheelbases and often a partition between driver and passenger compartments. Elegant cars typically used for special occasions or VIP transport.

Etymology

Named after Limousin, a region in France where shepherds wore distinctive hooded cloaks. The enclosed, protective nature of these cloaks was metaphorically applied to the covered luxury cars.

Kelly Says

The first limousines were actually designed to protect chauffeurs from weather, with the passenger compartment being secondary. Today's stretch limousines weren't invented until 1928, initially created for big band leaders to transport their instruments.
