Definition
People who remain faithful and committed to a person, group, or cause, especially when it's unpopular or difficult.
Etymology
From 'loyal' (from Old French 'loial,' from Latin 'legalis'), plus '-ist' (one who practices or believes). Historically, the term was most famously used for British colonists who supported the Crown during the American Revolution.
Kelly Says
During the American Revolution, loyalists were hated by patriots, but after the war many of them fled to Canada and founded new communities—showing how 'loyalty' to the wrong side at the wrong time can change your entire life.
