Mahal

/məˈhɑl/ noun

Definition

A palace or mansion, most famously used in 'Taj Mahal'; from Persian and Arabic meaning 'place' or 'palace'.

Etymology

From Persian and Arabic maḥall meaning 'place, location, palace.' The word entered English primarily through the famous Taj Mahal ('Crown Palace'), built as a mausoleum by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century.

Kelly Says

While most English speakers know 'mahal' only from the Taj Mahal, the word is still actively used across South Asia to mean any grand building or important place. The Taj Mahal's global fame made this single word perhaps the most recognized Persian/Arabic architectural term in English.
