Palace

/ˈpælɪs/ noun

Definition

A palace is a very large, grand house where a king, queen, or other important ruler lives. It is often richly decorated and used for ceremonies.

Etymology

From Old French 'palais', from Latin 'palatium', originally the name of the Palatine Hill in Rome where emperors lived. Over time it came to mean any grand residence for royalty or high officials.

Kelly Says

The word 'palace' secretly carries a piece of ancient Rome in it—every time you say it, you're echoing the name of a real hill where emperors once lived. That hill became so famous for rulers’ homes that its name turned into a general word for any royal residence.
