Manganese

/ˈmæŋɡəˌniːz/ noun

Definition

A hard, brittle metallic element with the symbol Mn, essential for steel production and found in many enzymes. It's also important for plant growth and human nutrition.

Etymology

From French manganèse, from Italian manganese, altered from Medieval Latin magnesia. This came from Greek Μαγνησία (Magnēsia), referring to a region in Thessaly, Greece, where magnetic iron ore was found. The element was confused with magnesium and magnetic iron ore before being identified as distinct in 1774.

Kelly Says

Manganese got its name from the same Greek region that gave us 'magnet' and 'magnesium' - ancient Magnesia was like the periodic table's birthplace! For centuries, people confused manganese with magnesium and magnetic iron, making it one of the most mixed-up elements in history until scientists finally sorted out that they were dealing with three completely different substances.
