Definition
The good qualities or positive aspects of something; something that deserves praise or reward based on its quality.
Etymology
From Latin 'meritus' (earned, deserved) from 'merere' (to earn). Originally meant what one earns or deserves, which evolved into the positive qualities that make something worthy.
Kelly Says
In school report cards and legal judgments, the word 'on its merits' means judging something purely by its quality—but the word 'merit' originally meant you had to 'earn' it, which is why it carries this sense of fairness and honest assessment.
