A row of houses converted from former stables, typically found in British cities. Originally referred to the stables themselves, particularly those where hawks were kept.
Etymology
From Middle English 'mewe' meaning 'cage for hawks,' from Old French 'mue' meaning 'molt, change.' The word shifted from referring to hawk houses to horse stables, then to converted residential properties in the 20th century.
