Photographic film containing miniaturized images of documents, used for archival storage and space-saving preservation of records.
Etymology
Compound of micro- (small) from Greek mikros, and film from Old English filmen (membrane). The technology developed in the 1920s as a solution for document storage and preservation in libraries and archives.

Before digital storage, microfilm was the ultimate space-saver - a single roll could contain thousands of newspaper pages or documents. Many historical records exist today only because they were preserved on microfilm before the originals were lost or destroyed!
