Definition
A measure of solution concentration expressed as the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter of solution. It's denoted by M and is temperature-dependent since volume changes with temperature.
Etymology
Derived from 'mole' (the unit for amount of substance) plus the suffix '-arity' indicating a rate or measure, developed in the early 20th century as chemistry became more quantitative. The mole concept itself comes from Latin 'moles' meaning 'mass.'
