Museum

/mjuˈziːəm/ noun

Definition

A museum is a place where objects of art, history, science, or culture are collected, cared for, and displayed for people to learn from and enjoy. Museums can be large national institutions or small local collections.

Etymology

From Latin *museum* “place of study,” from Greek *Mouseion* “seat of the Muses,” referring to a place dedicated to the goddesses of the arts and sciences. The famous Library of Alexandria was sometimes described as a *Mouseion*.

Kelly Says

A museum was originally a “house of the Muses,” meant for inspiration and learning, not just storage. That’s why modern museums try to tell stories and spark curiosity instead of simply lining up objects. The name reminds us they’re supposed to be living spaces for ideas, not quiet warehouses.
