Nahum

/ˈneɪhəm/ proper noun

Definition

A Hebrew name meaning 'comfort' or 'consolation,' also the name of a minor prophet in the Hebrew Bible. The seventh book of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament.

Etymology

From Hebrew 'Naḥum' derived from the root 'n-ḥ-m' meaning to comfort or console. The biblical Nahum prophesied the fall of Nineveh around the 7th century BCE, and the name has been used in Jewish and Christian traditions since.

Kelly Says

The Book of Nahum is unusual among biblical prophetic works because it focuses entirely on the destruction of Israel's enemy (Assyria) rather than calling Israel to repentance. This makes Nahum one of the few entirely 'positive' prophetic books from an Israelite perspective, living up to its name meaning 'comfort.'
