Definition
The capital and largest city of Kenya, located in the south-central part of the country.
Etymology
From Maasai 'Enkare Nairobi,' meaning 'cool water,' referring to the Nairobi River that flows through the area. The city was founded in 1899 as a railway depot during construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway.
Kelly Says
Nairobi's name beautifully preserves the Maasai people's connection to the landscape, describing the cool waters that made this highland area attractive for settlement. From a railway camp to a major African metropolis in just over a century, it represents one of the continent's most dramatic urban transformations.
