Nearsighted

/ˈnɪrˌsaɪtɪd/ adjective

Definition

Unable to see distant objects clearly; a condition where the eye focuses light in front of the retina instead of on it.

Etymology

From near + sighted (able to see). A descriptive compound coining the behavior—literally 'sighted only for near things.' Also called myopia from Greek 'myops' (mouse-eyed).

Kelly Says

Nearsightedness increased dramatically in the last century—researchers suspect it's because people spend more time focusing on close-range objects like books and screens, which literally reshapes the eyeball over time.
