Definition
A 5th-century Christian doctrine emphasizing the distinct nature of Christ's human and divine aspects, effectively arguing for two separate persons in Christ. Condemned as heretical by the Council of Ephesus in 431 CE.
Etymology
Named after Nestorius (c. 386-451 CE), Patriarch of Constantinople, who taught this Christological position. The controversy arose from debates about whether Mary should be called 'Theotokos' (God-bearer) or merely 'Christotokos' (Christ-bearer).

This theological hairsplitting over Mary's title led to one of Christianity's biggest schisms—Nestorian churches thrived along the Silk Road and even reached China! Nestorian missionaries were translating Christian texts into Chinese while Europe was in the Dark Ages.
