Nondescript

/ˌnɒndɪˈskrɪpt/ adjective

Definition

Lacking distinctive or interesting features; unremarkable and difficult to describe. Having no special or noteworthy characteristics.

Etymology

From non- (not) + descriptus, past participle of Latin describere (to write down, describe). The word literally means 'not described' or 'not worth describing.' It entered English in the 18th century, evolving from the idea that something so ordinary doesn't merit written description.

Kelly Says

Something 'nondescript' is literally 'not worth writing about'! This word perfectly captures how our ancestors viewed the relationship between writing and importance - if you couldn't describe it compellingly, it wasn't worth notice. It's the negative twin of 'describe,' showing how un-remarkable things escape the writer's pen.
