Definition
Following orders or rules; doing what someone in authority tells you to do.
Etymology
From Latin 'obedire' (ob- 'to' + audire 'to hear'), literally meaning 'to listen to' or 'to hear towards.' Over time it came to mean following what you hear as a command.
Kelly Says
The root 'audire' (to hear) is the same root as 'audio,' 'auditorium,' and 'audience'—all about listening! So obeying is really just what happens when you actually listen to what you're told.
