Orca

/ˈɔrkə/ noun

Definition

A large marine mammal also known as a killer whale, characterized by distinctive black and white coloring. Despite the name, orcas are actually the largest members of the dolphin family.

Etymology

From Latin 'orca' meaning a kind of whale, possibly related to 'orcus' meaning underworld or death. The scientific name Orcinus orca literally means 'demon from the depths of hell,' reflecting ancient fears of these powerful predators.

Kelly Says

Orcas are incredibly social and have distinct dialects - different pods literally speak different 'languages' of clicks and calls. They're also one of the few species besides humans that go through menopause, with grandmother whales leading their families.
