Parole

/pəˈroʊl/ noun

Definition

Parole is the conditional release of a prisoner before their full sentence is finished, as long as they follow certain rules. Breaking those rules can send the person back to prison.

Etymology

From French 'parole' meaning 'word' or 'promise'. It referred to a prisoner’s word of honor not to escape or fight again, especially in wartime.

Kelly Says

Parole began as a literal 'word of honor'—officers captured in war might be freed if they promised not to fight again. Modern parole keeps that DNA: freedom in exchange for a promise to behave.
