Pheasants

/ˈfɛzənts/ noun

Definition

Colorful birds with long tail feathers, often found in Asia and hunted for sport or food in many countries.

Etymology

From Old French 'faisan,' from Latin 'phasianus.' Named after the Phasis River in the Caucasus region where the birds originated.

Kelly Says

Male pheasants are so stunningly colorful that in the 1800s Victorians imported them to Britain just for decoration in estates, and now there are feral populations of these ornamental birds living wild in the English countryside.
