Etymology
From French 'plastron' meaning 'breastplate,' derived from Italian 'piastrone,' which came from 'piastra' (metal plate). Originally referring to armor protecting a soldier's chest, the term transferred to the starched shirt front that protected a gentleman's chest from spills and wear. In fencing, it returned to its protective origins as the padded chest piece, creating a word that traveled from medieval armor to formal fashion and back to sports protection.
