Definition
A poncho is a loose outer garment made from a large piece of cloth or plastic with a hole in the middle for the head. It hangs over the shoulders and body and is often used for warmth or protection from rain.
Etymology
From Spanish *poncho*, from Mapudungun (an indigenous language of South America) *pontro* or similar forms. It entered English through contact with Latin American clothing and culture.
Kelly Says
Every time you say *poncho*, you’re using a word that started in Indigenous South America, passed through Spanish, and then spread worldwide. Clothing words often travel with the garments themselves, carrying culture in their seams.
