Pontus

/ˈpɒntəs/ noun

Definition

In ancient geography, the Pontus Euxinus was another name for the Black Sea; also refers to an ancient kingdom on the coast of the Black Sea.

Etymology

From Greek 'pontos' meaning 'sea' or 'open water.' 'Pontus Euxinus' literally means 'hospitable sea' (the Greeks called the Black Sea this because they hoped it would treat sailors well). The Pontus kingdom was ruled by famous kings like Mithridates VI.

Kelly Says

The ancient Greeks were so scared of the Black Sea and its rough waters that they ironically called it 'Euxinus' meaning 'hospitable' to trick the sea spirits into being nice—like saying 'no curse here!'—which is hilarious sea-faring superstition!
