Potomac

/pəˈtoʊmæk/ noun

Definition

A river flowing through the eastern United States, forming part of the border between Maryland and Virginia.

Etymology

From Algonquian Patawomeck, meaning 'river of swans' or 'place where people trade.' The name was adopted by English colonists and has remained largely unchanged since the early 1600s, preserving indigenous linguistic heritage.

Kelly Says

The Potomac River's name beautifully preserves Native American linguistic heritage in the heart of American government - every time someone mentions Washington D.C.'s river, they're speaking an Algonquian word that predates European settlement by centuries.
