Presbyterian

/ˌprɛzbɪˈtɪriən/ adjective/noun

Definition

Relating to a Protestant denomination characterized by representative church government through elected presbyters; a member of such a church.

Etymology

From Greek 'presbyteros' (elder) + '-ian'. Presbyteros meant 'older, senior' and referred to church elders. The denominational use emerged during the Protestant Reformation in 16th century Scotland under John Knox.

Kelly Says

Presbyterian church structure revolutionized religious governance by rejecting both papal authority and congregational chaos, instead creating a middle way where elected elders govern - a system that influenced democratic political thought.
