Definition
One of three values that divide a dataset into four equal parts, each containing 25% of the data. The first quartile (Q1) marks the 25th percentile, the second quartile (Q2) is the median, and the third quartile (Q3) marks the 75th percentile.
Etymology
From Latin 'quartus' (fourth) plus '-ile' (relating to division). Coined in the late 1800s as statisticians developed methods to divide data into equal parts. Related to 'quarter,' both coming from the concept of dividing something into four equal portions.
Kelly Says
Quartiles are like cutting a pizza into four equal slices based on data values, not physical size - each 'slice' contains exactly 25% of your data points! The interquartile range (between Q1 and Q3) contains the middle 50% of your data, making it great for spotting outliers lurking in the extreme quartiles.
