Definition
A stringent liquidity ratio that measures a company's ability to meet short-term obligations using only the most liquid assets, calculated by dividing quick assets (cash, securities, receivables) by current liabilities. It excludes inventory and prepaid expenses.
Etymology
Developed in the early 20th century as analysts recognized that not all current assets are equally liquid. Also called the 'acid test ratio,' the term reflects the need for a more rigorous test of liquidity than the current ratio provides.

The quick ratio is like asking 'can you pay your bills if your inventory suddenly becomes worthless?' - it's the financial equivalent of a stress test! This ratio saved many investors during the 2008 crisis when companies with strong current ratios but heavy inventory exposure still went bankrupt.
