Definition
Resolution can mean a firm decision to do or not do something, the act of solving a problem, or the level of detail in an image or device. The exact meaning depends on the context.
Etymology
From Latin *resolutio* 'a loosening, solving', from *resolvere* 'to untie or explain'. Over time, it gained the sense of 'the final answer' and also 'clarity of detail'.
Kelly Says
A New Year’s resolution and a high screen resolution seem unrelated, but both are about clarity—one is clarity of intention, the other clarity of image. In stories, the 'resolution' is the part where loose ends are finally untied.
