Definition
Retention is the act of keeping something rather than losing or releasing it. It can refer to keeping employees, keeping information in memory, or keeping liquids or substances in the body.
Etymology
From Latin *retentio* 'a holding back', from *retinere* 'to hold back, keep'. The medical, business, and educational uses all grow from this same root idea.
Kelly Says
Schools worry about knowledge retention; companies worry about staff retention; doctors worry about fluid retention—and it’s all the same story: what stays instead of leaving. High retention sounds great in business, but dangerous in medicine.
