Retrace

/riːˈtreɪs/ verb

Definition

To go back along the same path you came from; to trace something again or look back at previous steps.

Etymology

From Latin 're-' (again) + 'trace' (to follow a path), combining the prefix with an existing English word. The term has been used since the 1500s for literally retracing footsteps and metaphorically retracing thoughts or events.

Kelly Says

When archaeologists want to understand how ancient people lived, they literally retrace their steps—finding the same paths worn into soil that people walked 2,000 years ago still visible today!
