Definition
The system of ropes, chains, and tackles used to support and control the sails of a ship; the act of manipulating something dishonestly.
Etymology
From 'rig', originally meaning 'to fit out a ship', from Old Norse 'rigga'. The sense of dishonest manipulation developed in the 19th century from the idea of setting something up in a particular way.
Kelly Says
Sailors had to master incredibly complex rigging systems with hundreds of ropes, each with specific names and functions - a mistake could mean disaster at sea. The phrase 'learning the ropes' comes from this nautical tradition, and today's metaphorical use of 'rigging' (cheating) plays on the same concept of hidden manipulation.
